Customer Review Policy

Last updated: July 2, 2026

At Maison Éclat Scent, we believe honest reviews — good and bad — help customers make better decisions and help us do better business. This policy explains what reviews we publish on our website, when we'll remove one, and how we moderate reviews. It covers reviews submitted directly to us. Reviews on third-party platforms like Google or Facebook are governed by those platforms' own policies, not this one.

We Maison Éclat Scent reserve the right to change our policies whenever and wherever we want at any point in time. We can choose to take down any reviews that we deem a violation to our review policy.

Our commitment

We moderate based on content, not star rating. A glowing five-star review that breaks the rules below comes down just as fast as a scathing one-star review that breaks them. In line with that, we will not:

  • Remove or hide a review because it's negative or unflattering
  • Display reviews in a way that hides, buries, or downplays negative feedback
  • Offer a discount, refund, or gift in exchange for a positive review — we may invite any customer to leave a review regardless of what it says, and we'll clearly disclose it if a review was left in exchange for an incentive
  • Post reviews of our own store, or a competitor's, without disclosing who we are
  • Edit a customer's review to make it sound more favorable

These commitments track the requirements of Canada's Competition Act, which treats reviews that create a false overall impression — through hidden negative feedback, fake reviews, or undisclosed incentives and insider connections — as misleading advertising.

Reviews we welcome

We publish reviews that:

  • Come from a genuine purchase or interaction with Maison Éclat Scent
  • Share the reviewer's honest opinion, including criticism, however bluntly put
  • Describe a specific experience with a product, staff member, shipping, or our return process
  • suggest what we could do better
  • Include photos or video of the actual product received

Your review doesn't need to be positive to stay up. It needs to be real.

Reviews we will remove

Regardless of star rating, we'll take down a review that falls into one of these categories:

1. Not a genuine review

Reviews from someone who never purchased from or interacted with us, reviews written by or for a competitor, and reviews posted as part of a campaign to move our rating rather than to share a real experience. This also covers reviews that we, our staff, or our families post about our own business or a competitor's without disclosing the connection.

2. Defamatory content & words

A false statement of fact — not an opinion — that damages our reputation or a staff member's, where the person posting it knew or should reasonably have known it wasn't true. This is a high bar: under Alberta's Defamation Act, an honest opinion based on true facts is protected as "fair comment" even when it's harsh. We won't remove a review just because we dislike it, disagree with it, or think it's unfair to us. If a review use defamatory or slang language, we will remove it as to keep the environment professional and appropriate. Words such as "scam", "counterfeits", "replicas", or any words that can harm our reputation and image that suggests a defamatory language and term of use will be removed.

3. Hate speech or discriminatory content

Content that exposes a person or group to hatred or contempt based on a protected characteristic — race, religion, color, gender, gender identity or expression, physical or mental disability, age, ancestry, place of origin, marital or family status, source of income, or sexual orientation. This is prohibited under the Alberta Human Rights Act and is never allowed here, regardless of what prompted it.

4. Threats, harassment, or illegal content

Threats of violence, targeted harassment of staff or other customers, doxxing (sharing someone's home address, personal phone number, or other identifying details), or anything else that would be illegal to publish.

5. Private or personal information

A review that discloses someone else's personal information without their consent — a staff member's home address, personal contact details, medical information, and similar. This protects everyone's rights under Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act.

6. Spam, advertising, or off-topic content

Reviews that are really ads for another business, contain malicious or phishing links, are posted multiple times, or have nothing to do with a product, service, or experience with Maison Éclat Scent.

7. Confidential information

Details from a conversation, settlement, or agreement between the reviewer and Maison Éclat Scent that both sides understood at the time to be confidential.

8. One review per transaction

Customers can only leave one review per transaction. During any point in time that a customer has received their delivered goods, or want to form a review based on their experience with us as long as it follows our guidelines. That one review they leave will be the final review. They cannot edit the review once they post it nor can we change it unless it violates our policy. Customers cannot leave more than one review per transaction, if a review is removed because it violates our review policy. The same customer who left the review for the specific transaction cannot leave another one, either positive, negative, or neutral. None at all.

How we moderate

  • New reviews are automatically screened for spam and obvious policy violations, then published within [timeframe]. We don't hold reviews back for manual approval based on their rating or tone.
  • Anyone — a customer, a staff member, or someone named in a review — can flag a review for us to check against this policy.
  • We'd rather reply publicly to a critical review than delete it. Our replies are held to the same standards as reviews.
  • If you believe a published review is false, defamatory, or otherwise breaks this policy — whether it's about you or someone else — email us at maisoneclatscent@gmail.com with a link to the review. We'll assess it against the criteria above, not against how it makes us look.

The law behind this policy

This policy is built around:

  • The federal Competition Act — misleading representations and testimonials (ss. 52, 74.01)
  • Alberta's Consumer Protection Act, RSA 2000, c C-26.3 — unfair business practices
  • Alberta's Defamation Act, RSA 2000, c D-7
  • Alberta's Human Rights Act, RSA 2000, c A-25.5
  • Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act, SA 2003, c P-6.5
